London, UK - September 30, 2025 - Climate Action for Associations (CAFA) is excited to welcome the British Coatings Federation, who represent around 250 UK manufacturers across paints, varnishes, and specialist industrial coatings, has been advancing sustainability within its sector. In 2023, BCF published a roadmap for net zero and developed tools and guidance to help members, particularly SMEs, measure their baseline emissions. Data collection currently focuses on Scope 1 and 2, with personalised reports provided annually through the Coatings Care programme.
Why this partnership matters
A significant challenge for the industry lies in Scope 3, which makes up 98% of its footprint. Therefore, the BCF is focused on improving data collection, working with suppliers, and supporting members to innovate in raw materials and recycling. This focus is due to raw materials, particularly titanium dioxide, resins, and pigments, account for the majority of emissions. While suppliers are working to decarbonise production, coatings manufacturers are also seeking to reduce titanium dioxide use, explore bio-based alternatives, and address recycling of paints and packaging. Alongside these efforts, BCF is engaged in consumer education to counter greenwashing and build clearer understanding of what makes a product genuinely sustainable.
The coatings sector not only has its own sustainability challenges but also plays an enabling role in other industries, from wind turbines to aerospace fuel efficiency. This creates a dual responsibility to reduce the footprint of coatings themselves while contributing to decarbonisation in wider value chains. The federation is also navigating complex regulatory issues, including UK–EU chemical divergence and debates over titanium dioxide classification, while continuing to advocate for its members.
Collaborating for climate action
By joining CAFA, BCF sees an opportunity to connect its members with peers across sectors, share experiences on Scope 3 measurement, and strengthen collective action on consumer education and circularity. Peer-to-peer learning is a particular priority, offering members practical insights and support in their journey to net zero. CAFA’s convening power and cross-sector reach will help amplify BCF’s efforts and cross-sector collaboration opportunities, ensuring that the coatings industry can both reduce its own environmental impact and contribute positively to broader climate goals.
The British Coatings Federation (BCF) is delighted to join CAFA and be part of a collective driving meaningful change. Coatings play a vital role in supporting environmental sustainability, and we are proud of the positive steps our members have already taken to reduce the impact of our industry. By collaborating with other associations, we can share knowledge, amplify our impact, and help our members advance the next stage of their net zero journeys. Joining CAFA reflects our commitment to leading by example and ensuring that our sector continues to play an active role in building a more sustainable future.
