In June 2024, the Construction Equipment Association (CEA) unveiled its 2024 Manifesto, outlining key priorities to secure the future of the UK’s construction equipment sector. With a strong focus on decarbonisation, the Manifesto aims to guide the industry towards sustainable growth and innovation, urging all members to actively advocate for these critical changes.
Decarbonisation is at the forefront of the CEA's agenda, reflecting the industry's commitment to supporting the UK’s climate goals. Leading manufacturers within the sector are already developing innovative solutions to enhance operational efficiency and reduce emissions. The CEA emphasises the importance of technology-neutral regulations that would encourage investment in a diverse range of low-carbon technologies without mandating specific solutions.
The Manifesto highlights that a significant portion of commercial R&D spending is directed towards decarbonisation efforts. This includes the development of zero-emission technologies such as full electric machines, hydrogen fuel cells, and clean diesel engines. The CEA advocates for regulatory frameworks aligned with global and European standards to ensure the UK market remains competitive and synchronised with international decarbonisation policies.
The CEA’s decarbonisation strategy also underscores the need for coherent national planning around fuel infrastructure, increased investment in alternative fuel technologies, and support for companies investing in low-emission products. The association believes these steps are vital for achieving the UK’s Net Zero ambitions and strengthening the construction equipment industry’s role in delivering sustainable built environments.
CAFA is delighted to see the CEA leading the way in decarbonising their industry. Their 2024 Manifesto highlights the significant steps the CEA is taking to guide the construction equipment sector towards a more sustainable future.
By focusing on decarbonisation, promoting innovative zero-emission technologies, and advocating for technology-neutral regulations, the CEA is demonstrating proactive leadership and supporting the industry’s transition to low-carbon practices, helping to achieve broader net zero goals.
