In this year of climate action and COP26, the GlobalABC is proud to become a Race to Zero Accelerator, and is calling on all its members to make strong and credible climate commitments, and to take immediate actions towards a zero-emission, resilient and efficient buildings and construction sector.
Race To Zero is a global campaign to rally climate leadership from non-state actors – businesses, cities, states, regions, universities and investors – for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth. All organisations recognised by Race To Zero are committed to the same overarching goal: halving emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. The campaign has so far mobilised 733 cities, 31 regions, 3067 businesses, 173 of the biggest investors, and 624 Higher Education Institutions, bringing together leading decarbonisation initiatives.
Restricting climate change to 1.5°C would need “rapid and far-reaching” changes around energy use, industry and buildings design, as well as the wider planning of cities and infrastructure. The buildings and construction sector currently account for almost 40% of global energy and process-related carbon emissions, while around half of buildings that are predicted to exist in 2050 have yet to be built. Continuing in this direction, over 970 cities could be subjected to extreme heat, 500 cities could suffer from lack of water availability, and over 570 cities could be impacted by sea level rise by 2050. If action is not taken today, we risk locking emissions and vulnerability into our buildings and infrastructure that will become increasingly costly to mitigate in the future.
As the leading global platform for built environment stakeholders committed to a zero-emission, efficient and resilient buildings and construction sector, our members include critical actors from the sector's value chain such as businesses, investors, regions, cities and universities. A Paris-compliant world is not possible without a decarbonized built environment, and the GlobalABC therefore invites all its members to meet the Race to Zero criteria and to join the campaign through one of its partner initiatives/networks.
