The British Promotional Merchandise Association joins Climate Action for Associations

Updated: Aug 6

The British Promotional Merchandise Association (BPMA) serves the £1.5 billion promotional products industry in the UK and Northern Ireland. Offering invaluable advice and guidance to the entire promotional merchandise industry BPMA is committed to excellence and compliance through a strict Code of Conduct. With a focus on best practice and governance, the BPMA is dedicated to quality, accurate advertising, fair trade terms, managing customer complaints, and spearheading the industry’s sustainability and net zero commitments.

Promotional merchandising is often criticised for contributing significantly to waste and landfill. Key concerns include the use of single-use products, overproduction, recycling, and disposal. Sustainable practices are not yet universally adopted, and the promotional merchandising industry faces significant challenges in minimising its environmental footprint. This is why the BPMA’s leadership in this space is so important.

Alison Heppenstall, CEO of Climate Action for Associations, emphasised the significance of the BPMA joining CAFA, stating,

"The BPMA is important because it sets out the benchmark for excellence and integrity in the promotional products industry. By joining the CAFA Collective, the BPMA is showing clear leadership and is committing to reducing its emissions internally and putting policies and activities in place to support and guide its members.”

Phil Goodman, CEO of the BPMA, highlighted their commitment to sustainability, saying,

“Sustainability is an issue that we take seriously at the British Promotional Merchandise Association, both in supporting our members on their own sustainability journeys and ensuring that our own standards are exceptional. We are entering the second year of the Step Forward Pledge, which is our initiative to encourage our members to adopt a robust sustainability strategy, and results in year one has been extremely positive. Working with CAFA enables us to be aware of how other trade associations are tackling the issue and to also share experiences and knowledge for the collective good.”

CAFA looks forward to supporting BPMA to take increased climate action.
