Boeing is advancing its sustainability strategy to support the aviation industry’s decarbonisation objectives. The company’s 2024 Sustainability and Social Impact Report outlines consistent progress with a carbon management approach based on 'avoid first, remove second.'
Boeing's Chief Sustainability Officer, Brian Moran, remarked, "We are pleased with our steady progress in sustainability, which remains grounded in safety and quality. Our commitment to decarbonisation, community development, and inclusion is both motivating and crucial."
The 2024 report highlights:
Engagement with over 100 stakeholders and support for 20 major events using the Boeing Cascade Climate Impact Model to evaluate aviation emissions strategies.
Sourcing 39% of operational energy from renewable sources in 2023.
Increasing racial/ethnic minority representation in the U.S. workforce by 6.4 percentage points and female representation globally by 1.2 percentage points since 2020.
Enhancing employee volunteer hours by 100,000 in 2023, amounting to a total of 477,000 hours dedicated to charitable causes.
Contributing £60 million in employee donations, bolstered by the Boeing Gift Match Programme.
David L. Calhoun, Boeing’s President and CEO, stated, "We are dedicated to supporting the aviation industry’s aim of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Our decisions influence the future health of our planet, and we are committed to developing innovative solutions."
Boeing’s 'avoid first, remove second' strategy focuses on reducing emissions through investments in renewable energy and efficient infrastructure, and addressing residual emissions through carbon removal projects and offsets.
Sustainable Operations
Boeing emphasises sustainability within its own operations, addressing greenhouse gas emissions, energy procurement, and water and waste management. The company has set ambitious 2025 targets across five operational categories and reports progress annually, focusing on renewable energy, infrastructure investment, and conservation.
David L. Calhoun concluded, "Our sustainability efforts reflect our mission and future aspirations. We operate with transparency and accountability, involving all employees in our environmental and community initiatives. Our collective actions are vital for a sustainable future for all stakeholders."
Considering the growing need for sustainable practices, travel policies play a crucial role in reducing organisations' carbon footprints, particularly in sectors where air travel is prevalent.
Climate Action for Associations provides a comprehensive travel policy template to members, designed to help organisations minimise their environmental impact.
By implementing a low carbon travel policy, associations can significantly cut down on emissions associated with air travel, aligning their operations with broader sustainability goals and supporting the aviation industry's decarbonisation efforts.
This proactive approach not only contributes to global climate goals but also sets a benchmark for responsible and sustainable organisational practices.
